mould spores exist all around us, but only grow and thrive in damp, relatively humid environments with little or no air circulation (stagnant air). humidity in the home is caused by normal household activities such as washing, bathing cooking, drying clothes and of course, even breathing! it's not normally a problem in the summer months when the weather is warm and the windows and doors are often open. but in winter - with colder weather and temperatures, more humidity from rain, and less ventilation in the home - humidity can cause mould spores to grow and thrive in the cooler, less ventilated areas of the home. the amount of moisture that air can absorb and carry depends on the temperature of the air. the warmer the air, the more moisture it can carry. the amount of moisture in air is referred to by the term '% relative humidity' (% rh), where 0% rh means no moisture in the air, and 100% rh means the air has reached the limit of its capacity to carry moisture at that air temperature. mould forms when the relative humidity of the air in your home (rooms, wardrobes, cupboards) increases above c. 45% to 50% - most moulds cannot thrive below that humidity level - and the humid air then comes into contact with colder surfaces, such as outside walls (or fabrics) in rooms or spaces which are not heated, which cools the air (reduces its ability to absorb the moisture). the moisture condenses out onto the surfaces or fabrics in your home. if these areas are not warmed and ventilated, then the mould spores can thrive and spread. so the main causes of mould and musty smells in wardrobes are: 1. relative humidity above c. 50%. 2. lack of ventilation (stagnant air) 3. surfaces that are cooler than the air temperature, which allows moisture in the air to condense out and provide the ideal conditions for mould to form. fitted wardrobes (and also normal wardrobes, walk-in cupboards and similar) are often installed without any thought to ventilation. if they are also positioned on outside walls the problem can be more severe - especially if the wall is solid and therefore cold (no cavity insulation) and/or north-facing (little sun) or the wall faces south-west (gets the worst of the wind and weather in winter). even if the fitted wardrobe has ventilator louvres fitted (which is unusual) there can be little or no movement of air through the wardrobe since the ventilators are usually small and there is no mechanism encouraging the air to circulate through them. how can mould, mildew & musty/mouldy smells in fitted wardrobes be removed and prevented?
